The ‘Bo’ or Bodhi is an awakening. Long before Siddartha Guatama sat and meditated underneath the Bodhi Tree to gain enlightenment, the word Bo/Bodhi has meant awakening.
There are now Bodhi Tree Mediations, and spiritual practices that have been built up around the tree. For us, the leaves of the tree symbolically resemble a heart, and all spiritual aspirants know that unconditional love is an intrical aspect of spiritual awakening. Even the scientific world recognizes its spiritual significance giving it the latin botanical name of “ficus religiosa” or religious fig.
Prior to association with the spiritual awakening of the Buddha, the Bodhi Tree was the symbol for Vishnu – the sustainer of the universe. It is said that as Vishnu laid amongst the leaves of the Bodhi Tree, he was renewed and energized from the very essence of the tree as he stared out at the universe in all its infinite glory and beauty.
